Heliocentrism: Explained

For almost 2000 years, Western thinking was greatly impacted by the concept of the Universe being centered around Earth, promoted by Ptolemy and Aristotle. In the 16th century, Nicolaus Copernicus, a polish Astronomer, proposed a new concept.

Copernicus proposed that Sun was the center of the solar system, not earth, in his book of "On the revolutions of the heavenly bodies". This theory or model was called the Heliocentric system, in 1543.

The Copernican model supplanted Ptolemy's geocentric system and became the launching point for modern astronomy. Heliocentrism described Earth as just an another planet, placed third from the Sun.

Copernicus, using this system of Heliocentrism, also explained that stars are distant objects that did not revolve around the Sun. Instead Earth rotates once on its axis for 24 hours. This causes stars to appear as if they are really revolving around Earth.

The Heliocentrism system was not accepted first accepted by society because it challenged the beliefs and customs. But gradually, like everything else we discovered, it was accepted.
